Explore Vietnam with Towson University in summer 2023! Learn about U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War during, before, and after the American Vietnam War, or as the Vietnamese refer to it, "The American War." Spend time in
Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Hanoi, Hoi An, and Hue. Program highlights include visits to the National War Museum, the War Remnants Museum, and the Air Force Museum; excursions to the Cu Chi tunnels between North and South Vietnam near the DMZ, an overnight boat trip to Halong Bay, and a cruise on the Mekong River.

May 27 - June 12, 2023. Class assignments and lectures may also take place online and/or on the Towson University campus prior to and after the experience in Vietnam.

MARCH 15, 2023. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is limited.

Dr. Robert Rook - Towson University Department of History and Interdiciplinary Studies

Students will choose one of the following courses:

  • IDIS 494 Travel and Study in Interdisciplinary Studies (3 credits)
  • HIST 494 Travel and Study (3 credits)

 

Shared hotel rooms (2-3 students per room). Single occupancy rooms may be available upon request (but cannot be guaranteed) for a supplemental fee of approximately $350. Single rooms will not be available on the overnight boat trip or the farm house in Vinh Long.

Program fee includes international airfare to and from the U.S. (Baltimore-DC area), regional flights in Vietnam, academic credit (3 credits), housing, most meals, excursions and activities, and health insurance. Additional costs include all other meals, vaccinations*, personal expenses, and the Study Abroad/Away Fee.

IMPORTANT: Vaccinations against Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended by the CDC for all travelers to Vietnam. Vaccination costs up to $200 per student will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts to the Study Abroad & Away Office courtesy of the College of Liberal Arts.

The Towson University Study Abroad & Away Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Note: International airfare IS included in the program cost. Students are required to participate in the group flight.

Withdrawals/Refunds: After admission into the program, the student is responsible for the full program fee. Should the student wish to withdraw from the program for any reason after admission, only recoverable expenses may be refunded. Non-recoverable expenses may include but are not limited to costs paid to a study abroad provider, travel agency, or other third party by TU on the students behalf; housing; transportation; non-refundable deposits; activity fees; honorariums; guest lecture fees. Standard Towson University withdrawal/drop/add deadlines do not apply. The student must submit their intention to withdraw in writing to the TU Study Abroad & Away Office.

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, a high school diploma or equivalent experience, and be at least 18 years old. Prerequisites: At least one college level history course. AP credit accepted.

Note: This trip involves moderate to occasionally intense physical exertion (i.e. strenuous hiking and walking) and travel by boat. The climate in Vietnam in the summer is hot and humid. 

IMPORTANT: Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations are recommended for travel to Vietnam.

IMPORTANT: We strongly encourage all study abroad/away participants to get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 prior to their experience. Participants will be subject to the entry requirements and COVID related regulations of the host destination and program provider/host institution. We recommend students consider purchasing travel insurance with cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage. Students will be responsible for any COVID related expenses incurred during their experience abroad/away.
