When East meets West! Explore education, ethics, and change in China with Towson University in Summer 2018.  Tracing the intellectual history of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, program participants will witness how China's education has been impacted by tradition and explore ethical and social justice issues from multiple perspectives. The learning experience will be enhanced by school and university visits, guest lectures, and and immersive cultural activities. Participants will gain a dynamic view of how tradition and modernity interact both within and across cities.

Students will spend time in Beijing - China's capital city and political, financial, educational, and cultural center, Luoyang - considered the cradle of Chinese civilization, and Xi'an known for its terracotta soldiers. Program highlights include visits to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Longmen Grottoes, and the Shaolin Temple. Participants will also learn how to make dumplings from local community members!

Students choose one of the following:

SCED 304 Education, Ethics, and Change (3 credits, Core 14)
SCED 494 Travel and Study in Secondary Education (3 credits)
ELED 494 Travel and Study in Elementary Education (3 credits)
SCED 594 Travel and Study in Secondary Education (3 credits, graduate students only)
ELED 594 Travel and Study in Elementary Education (3 credits, graduate students only)

TU students may receive Honors credit for their study abroad experience.

Shared rooms in hotels throughout the program. Breakfast and lunch daily (lunch not included on scheduled free day).

Program fee includes academic credit, housing, breakfast daily, most lunches, a welcome and farewell dinner, excursions, activities, health insurance, and visa fees. Additional costs include international airfare, all other meals, personal expenses, and the Study Abroad Fee.

The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

NOTE: International airfare is NOT included in the program cost.Students will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements to the program location to arrive by the designated date and time. The Study Abroad Office will identify an optional flight which participants are encouraged to purchase independently.

Withdrawals/Refunds: After admission into the program, the student is responsible for the full program fee. Should the student wish to withdraw from the program for any reason after admission, only recoverable expenses may be refunded. Non-recoverable expenses may include but are not limited to costs paid to a study abroad provider, travel agency, or other third party by TU on the students behalf; housing; transportation; non-refundable deposits; activity fees; honorariums; guest lecture fees. Towson University withdrawal/drop/add deadlines do not apply. The student must submit his/her intention to withdraw in writing to the TU Study Abroad Office.

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, a high school diploma or equivalent experience, and be at least 18 years old. Graduate standing for graduate level credit.
