Study psychology in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa in summer 2021. This program provides a comparative examination of the values, ideas, and practical applications of psychology in both the United States and South Africa. Students will seek to understand human behavior and cognitive processes through the exploration of psychological theories, their application in the real world, and how they are shaped by cultural variation. Observe psychological concepts first-hand through interactions with local residents, scholars and students from local universities, employees from local organizations, and guest lectures related to the South African culture.

Students will have the opportunity to visit cultural and historical sites such as Robben Island and the District Six Museum and take part in excursions to Table Mountain, Boulder Beach, Pilanesberg National Park, and more!

MARCH 15, 2021. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is limited.

Students will take the following courses for a total of 6 credits:

  • PSYC 494 Travel and Study Abroad in Psychology (3 credits)
  • PSYC 470 Special Topics in Psychology (3 credits)

TU students may receive Honors credit for their study abroad experience.

Single occupancy rooms in apartments and hotels.

Program fee includes academic credit, housing (single occupancy), excursions, daily breakfast, health insurance, welcome and farewell dinner, and other group meals listed in the program itinerary. Additional costs include international airfare, all other meals, personal expenses, and the Study Abroad Fee.

The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

$500 TU Priority Country Scholarship application due March 15! 

Note: International airfare is NOT included in the program cost.Students will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements to the program location to arrive by the designated date and time. The Study Abroad Office will identify an optional flight which participants are encouraged to purchase independently.

Withdrawals/Refunds: After admission into the program, the student is responsible for the full program fee. Should the student wish to withdraw from the program for any reason after admission, only recoverable expenses may be refunded. Non-recoverable expenses may include but are not limited to costs paid to a study abroad provider, travel agency, or other third party by TU on the students behalf; housing; transportation; non-refundable deposits; activity fees; honorariums; guest lecture fees. Towson University withdrawal/drop/add deadlines do not apply. The student must submit his/her intention to withdraw in writing to the TU Study Abroad Office.

Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, a high school diploma or equivalent experience, and be at least 18 years old. Prerequisites: PSYC 101 or consent of instructor.

Once study abroad programming resumes, a negative COVID test and/or proof of a COVID vaccine (if available prior to the study abroad term) may be required for participation. Participants must comply with all entry requirements, social distancing, and PPE guidelines of the host country and program provider/host institution and will be responsible for providing their own PPE for the duration of their time abroad. All students are strongly encouraged to purchase cancel for any reason (CFAR) insurance to cover all study abroad related expenses.
