Study film and craft fantastic worlds through animation and visual effects in the New Zealand landscape in Summer 2018. Since Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films hit the screen, New Zealand has become a mecca for film lovers eager to visit these spectacular landscapes and locations. In this hybrid production/studies course we will learn through making. Participants will study the history of film effects then create animation and visual effects themselves using hand-crafted and digital processes. Students will also complete a service-learning component in Wellington to make a collaborative stop-motion animation using mobile digital devices.

Program highlights include guest lectures and visits to Hobbiton, the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, a prviate tour of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and the Oscar-winning creative production house Weta Workshop known for their award-winning film sets, costumes, armor, weapons, creatures, and miniatures.
