PROGRAM CANCELLED

Study abroad in Berlin, Germany with Towson University in Summer 2020! Explore how the arts have played a critical role in welcoming, integrating, connecting, and healing refugees through history to the current day. Learn how the arts can help displaced people establish new identities while still holding on to their cultures and customs.

Unlike the U.S. and many other countries who have closed their borders or offered only limited help in response to the current refugee crisis, Germany has welcomed millions with a committment to integrate them into their host society. Artists, arts organizations, schools, and art educators have been rapidly developing ways to employ the arts to engage and support this influx of refugees. Program participants will learn about artistic social innovation in the face of crisis and be offered a unique opportunity to focus on arts engagement with refugees including daily arts events, walking tours, guest speakers, school visits, and an intensive exchange with educators from across Germany. Other program highlights include German language lessons and site visits to the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Reichstag, and the Holocaust memorial.

Note: This program involves an average of 8 miles of walking each day. Not all metro stations have elevators or escalators.
