Open to Fall 2023 incoming Freshman and transfer students ONLY

Take your TU New Student Orientation to the next level with the TU Tigers Abroad program to Brazil in August 2023! Establish a cohort of your peers to help you succeed during your academic career at TU and beyond.

Following your new student orientation on the TU campus, fly to Brazil for a 12-day faculty-led study abroad program where you will explore urban design that fosters civic engagement and the efficacy of public policy in neighborhood revitalization. By participating in this program, you will begin your first semester at TU having already earned 3 credits for MTRO 101 Introduction to Metropolitan Studies, which fulfills the Core 10 curriculum requirement!

The program will begin with an examination of the opportunities and challenges faced by policymakers and residents in the city of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil's second largest city and its capital up until 1960. Over the course of six days, participants will trace Rio's rapid population growth and examine the resulting pressures on services and amenities. The group will then travel on to Salvador da Bahia where they will conduct a comparative study. Recognized as one of the largest cities in Brazil, Salvador is known as the center of Afro-Brazilian culture, with the music, religion, food, and dance derived from the city's African roots on full display. Salvador s is also an ideal setting to explore the topic of the course as a culturally rich city that is sure to give you the perfect glimpse into the traditions and history that Brazil has to offer. Students will examine urban development in context through an interdisciplinary framework aligned with U.S. Foreign Policy goals. Academic visits, lectures by industry leaders, service-learning activities, and group discussions will center on issues of cyber security and IT, entrepreneurship and innovation, energy and natural resources, closing the skills gap, human rights, economic development, infrastructure, and public health.

Progam highlights include visits to the Statue of Christ, the Museum of Tomorrow, and Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro, a city tour of Salvador da Bahia, a visit to local primary or secondary schools, the Afro-Brazilian Museum, and a service learning activity in the local community.
